Updating the Firmware on the VPC-C6
(For Macintosh)

This page explains how to download the firmware for VPC-C6 from the home page and install it.

This firmware is for the VPC-C6 only. Please do not install it on another model.
Before updating the firmware, please read through the explanations on this page.
Make sure to update the firmware in the order shown below.
The camera might not boot up properly if its power is turned off during the firmware-updating procedure.
Please read the accompanying licensing agreement before downloading this firmware. Downloading the firmware automatically implies your acceptance of the licensing agreement.

■Requirements
SD memory card (henceforth referred to as “card”) with capacity over 8 MB.
Fully charged lithium ion battery or AC adapter (shipped with the camera). Additionally, you need one of the items listed below:
(i) An SD memory card reader, or PC card reader, or a computer equipped with a PC card slot (henceforth referred to as “card reader”)
(ii) A docking station or interface adapter and dedicated USB interface cable (shipped with the camera).
  Caution
Be sure not to take out the battery or disconnect the AC adapter during the updating procedure (this lasts about 90 seconds)
Avoid operating the buttons of the camera or closing the monitor unit during the updating procedure.

■Preparing to Update (Copying the Firmware onto a Card)
  1. Format the Card on Your Camera
Please refer to the camera manual (page 128, Formatting a Card) to format the card.
  Caution
If you format a card, all images and data stored on the card (whether protected or not) are deleted. Please be sure to move or copy important images and data to a computer or to another card.

  2. Download the Firmware
The firmware can be downloaded here.
  Caution
Please be sure to download and decompress the file onto a hard drive and not onto a removable location such as a card reader.
Download “s815nup1.hqx” if you are using Mac OS 9, and “s815nup1.zip” if you are using Mac OS X.
The compressed file is automatically downloaded to your desktop and decompressed.
If the file is not decompressed automatically, please use Stufflt Expander or a compatible utility to decompress it.

  3. Decompress the Files You Downloaded
If you decompress the file with Stufflt Expander or a compatible utility, a folder named “VPC-C6” is created on the desktop and a file named “s815nup1.bin” is created inside this folder.
  Caution
Please be sure to download and decompress the file onto a hard drive and not onto a removable location such as a card reader.

  4. Copy the File Downloaded in Step 2 onto the Card Formatted at Step 1
The method of operation differs depending on whether you use a card reader or a dedicated USB cable.

When you copy the downloaded files with a card reader:
  (1) Put the formatted card from step 1 in the card reader.
  (2) Copy the “s815nup1.bin” file created on your hard disk in step 3 to the root directory of the card.

When you copy the downloaded files with a dedicated USB cable:
  (1) Connect the camera to your computer.
When you connect to your computer, please make sure the camera’s USB interface is set to “Card Reader”. Please refer to "Setting to the card reader mode" in the software manual ( page 10 ).
• Connect the camera to your computer with a USB cable and turn on the camera’s power.
• Please make sure the camera is recognized as a removable disc.
  (2) Put the formatted card from step 1 in the camera and then copy the “s815nup1.bin” file created on your hard disk in step 3 to the root directory of the card.
  (3) Remove the camera.
• Please read “Dismounting the Camera” on page 10 of the software manual for a description of how to disconnect the camera.
